Composting

Recycling has been a part of Greathouse Landscape for the past ten years. With yard waste comprising about 13% of Nashville's landfill, we all have the responsibility to conserve our natural resources and reduce the amount of waste that goes there.

At our nursery, we accomplish this by separating the yard waste that comes in from all of our projects into three different categories. The first category is root balls, poor soil, and rock. The second category is wood and brush. And the third category is leaves, flowers and grass clippings.

As you can see in the picture, the brush gets ground-up into mulch by a special machine that we rent for a few days each year. We then mix this mulch with the leaves and let it compost for a minimum of one year. During the year we turn the pile to aerate it just as you would a compost bin at home. Once this compost cycle is complete, we grind it and screen it. The screening process eleminates any large chunks or debris. This turns the mixture into a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost which our customers love.

Here at Greathouse Landscape, we are proud to say that we have taken a liability to our city and neighbors and turned it into an asset for both our company and our customers.
